Don’t look back, you’re not going that way!
At BDB we don’t hold annual review meetings.
A review of what has happened in investment markets can sometimes be useful in informing how we got to where we are today, but there is not very much we can do about it after the event. We passionately believe that financial planning has the power to change lives, but we can only do this by looking forward. This is why we call our annual client meetings forward planning meetings or ‘FPMs’ rather than reviews. Forward Planning and thinking about the future is where we are able to do our most powerful work, so it will not come as a surprise to learn that this is where we like to spend most of the precious time we get to spend with our clients.
When we build our client’s financial plans with them, assumptions need to be made, for example about how their assets will grow. Looking back is useful in giving us and our clients reassurance that the assumptions we have made are being borne out in reality. Yes we talk to them about how their portfolios are performing and why, however the real purpose is to build confidence that the long term returns they need will be delivered.
So, if you are yet to have your first FPM with BDB, be prepared for a very different experience. Whilst we love to talk about what has happened with investments and markets, we much prefer to talk about what is really important to you.
I am responsible for scheduling all of the FPMs here at BDB, so if you would like to schedule your FPM or talk to me about the process and what is involved, I would love to hear from you.
