In his ‘free’ time, Tim is also involved in the ‘Dragons’ […]

bdb is expanding at Gardner House
by Celine Delasalle on August 2nd, 2018

After a number of very successful years in our Hornbeam Park Oval offices, we have reached the end of an era at bdb. As we continue to grow, our office has become too restrictive for our expanding team. The time is now right for bdb to move to a more spacious and convenient location for […]

BDB at Christmas
by Catherine Sherwood on December 19th, 2017

Here at BDB, we are strong believers that there is no greater gift than giving, and there is no better time to do so than at this time of year. An Alternative Advent Calendar Rather than munching on a chocolate each morning, we have been building a reverse advent calendar, the idea being that […]

A whole new start
by Catherine Sherwood on December 7th, 2017

As a born and bred Southerner I made the big move T’up North a month ago. As a keen walker and fan of the outdoors the beautiful Yorkshire countryside has been calling my Husband and I since we first ‘holidayed’ in Harrogate last Summer. My husband secured employment in Leeds and moved up […]

Invest In Your Family’s Future

There has been a lot made in recent years about how younger generations are going to afford to retire. David Willets, former MP and author of ‘The Pinch’ expresses concern that it will become increasingly difficult for younger generations to retire comfortably and that widespread ‘pensioner poverty’ is a looming crisis. To be honest, we are […]

Today is World Alzheimer’s Day!

Today is World Alzheimer’s Day, a day to reflect on the global dementia challenge and also to focus on the steps we can all take to support people with dementia. Summer Drinks and Gardening Tips at RHS Harlow Carr
by Matt Kiddle on August 8th, 2017

We enjoyed a wonderful evening last week at our first ever BDB summer drinks event at RHS Harlow Carr here in Harrogate. Despite some typically Yorkshire looking weather during the day beforehand, the sun shone on us for the only dry few hours of the day.  The gardens looked truly spectacular in the evening sunlight […]

What We Learned from the FCA’s Asset Management Study
by Dan Clark on July 19th, 2017

Recently, the FCA issued their findings following a review into the Asset Management Industry which has received significant media attention in the press and online. Whilst this study was not strictly intended to include a review of the advice market, much of what has been concluded does have a direct impact. Here are the headlines […]

A New Chapter
by Dan Clark on July 19th, 2017

Having only joined BDB last month, I still feel a bit like the new guy here. However, hopefully my colleagues will agree I am steadily getting up to speed; although I can’t deny there is a lot of change to take in.  So, a bit of background about me, I have almost 5 years of […]

BDB Clay Shoot Day 2017
by Harriet Dennis on June 27th, 2017

We had brilliant fun last week at our annual clay shooting day which was held at Thimbleby Shooting Ground, located in the beautiful North Yorkshire Moors. There was a great mix of novice and experienced shooters who all tucked in to bacon butties on arrival.  A perfect way to prepare for the challenge ahead.   […]

Harnessing the Power of a Power of Attorney
by Matt Kiddle on June 16th, 2017

This last few weeks at BDB we have experienced a common theme with respect to one of the key issues our clients are tackling, and that is the sensitive and sometimes upsetting experience of dealing with their increasingly frail parents needs. Care costs and the issue of how we pay for the care for our increasing elderly […]

Placing a value on our value…
by Matt Kiddle on February 20th, 2017

At BDB, our mission is to use the power of life changing financial planning to help couples live truly succesful lives. We have very many examples of how successful we have been in making a huge difference, whether it is empowering a senior executive to step off the hamster wheel, or bringing forward the purchase of […]

The BDB team learn a thing or two about each other
by Amy Hull on February 8th, 2017

To start the year off well, the BDB team had a motivating day in Leeds finding out about where everyone’s personal strengths lie. The day was carried out by Martyn Chappell and Katie Lovatt at Dimensional Fund Advisors (an organisation that you will all know of), who led multiple workshops throughout the afternoon. The main […]

BDB Second Opinion Service
by Tim Brear on February 1st, 2017

“We could probably do with a second opinion…”     “… there are known knowns; there are things we know we know. We also know there are known unknowns; that is to say we know there are some things we do not know. But there are also unknown unknowns – the ones we don’t know […]

BDB Sponsors Andy Reid’s new mega-Challenge
by Tim Brear on January 23rd, 2017

In 2009 Corporal Andy Reid of the Yorkshire Regiment (formerly the Duke of Wellington’s Regiment) lost 3 limbs in an IED incident in Helmand province, Afghanistan. Since then, this most inspirational of men has achieved an incredible amount, things that his young son, William, will be incredibly proud of when he is old enough to […]

Warren Buffett advocates the BDB way for his heirs.
by Tim Brear on January 4th, 2017

Well obviously he would if he had met us but read what he does have to say in support of our investment philosophy, particularly about how he wants his fortune invested for his heirs. What applies in the USA is just as relevant here in the UK. Here is a link to his address to […]

Getting the most out of your BDB Buddy!
by Oliver Smith on December 22nd, 2016

Our clients will know that we do things a little differently at BDB, we passionately believe that “real wealth is measured in time and relationships” and not money. That’s why your BDB buddy is perfect to give you a little more time and security, by making sure you never lose anything it’s attached to again. It also […]

Are you irrational when it comes to investment?
by Matt Kiddle on December 12th, 2016

Our clients will be familiar by now with us talking about the importance of managing behavioural risk.  It is one of a myriad of threats to the success of our clients financial plans and we are constantly thinking about how we can best help to manage it. Behavioural finance is very much in vogue at […]

In Pole Position
by Harriet Dennis on November 30th, 2016

Last week, the BDB team had a very unusual day at the office, starting the afternoon with a team building day at the new KPMG offices in Leeds (thanks to KPMG for allowing us to use one of their meeting rooms) followed by an evening of entertainment at Team Sport in Leeds (Go-Karting). After chasing each […]

BDB at the Leeds Abbey Dash
by Oliver Smith on November 22nd, 2016

Despite the inclement weather on Sunday, the inaugural BDB Abbey Dash day went exceptionally well, with speedy performances achieved by everyone who took part. This was followed by a client-team catch up brunch in the town hall tavern, much needed after the exertion of the race.  The day […]

US Election – What does it mean for my portfolio?
by Matt Kiddle on November 9th, 2016

As I write this, I watch Donald Trump addressing his supporters with a speech to celebrate what has for the most part seemed a very unlikely victory at the US general election. In a similar vein to our recent experiences in the UK with the Brexit vote, the public have once again confounded the predictions of […]

On the start line!
by Oliver Smith on November 4th, 2016

I was delighted to be offered an Executive Assistant role with the BDB team in October. I graduated earlier this year with a 1st in International Business Management at the University of Northumbria. This involved me studying Finance at EDHEC University in the South of France and working in aviation insurance in Madrid. I saw […]

A great profile of Tim, Andrew and BDB in the Yorkshire Post Business section today! A link to the online version of the article can be found here. IFP Conference – Standing Tall Together
by Matt Kiddle on October 10th, 2016

Another successful conference last week at the fabulous Celtic Manor resort in Newport. This year was a little different, as it was the first since the Institute of Financial Planning merger with CISI (the Chartered Institute for Securities and Investment). The whole purpose of the merger was to join forces to better promote proper financial […]

Autumn bares its teeth at the first BDB golf day
by Matt Kiddle on September 30th, 2016

Some very testing conditions for our friends and competitors at the inaugural BDB golf day yesterday. Blustery winds, squally showers and occasional sunshine all added to the challenge of the hills and fast greens at Moor Allerton. After a light lunch spent learning the intricacies of the stableford scoring system, Tim soon had everyone on […]

Don’t look back, you’re not going that way!
by Harriet Dennis on September 27th, 2016

At BDB we don’t hold annual review meetings. A review of what has happened in investment markets can sometimes be useful in informing how we got to where we are today, but there is not very much we can do about it after the event.  We passionately believe that financial planning has the power to […]

A new start and a new challenge!
by Amy Hull on September 19th, 2016

In July this year I was lucky enough to join the BDB team as a Client Administrator. Having spent two years in financial services, I’m keen to get stuck in to my new role and learn all about the business.  You could well be hearing from me in the near future as I look to […]

Information Security
by Andrew Brook-Dobson on September 6th, 2016

Information Security has been on our minds at BDB for some time and the events at Talk Talk last November were a stark reminder to our leadership team, as I’m sure they were to boards all over the country, of how seriously these threats need to be taken. Verizon’s 2016 Data Breach investigations Report identified that 63% […]

Property and Liquidity
by Matt Kiddle on August 4th, 2016

As we all adjust to a post Brexit UK, the first indicators on how the vote has impacted the economy are starting to filter through.  Today the Bank of England has cut interest rates to its lowest rate for seven years in an initial bid to stave off a recession. One way in which Brexit has already […]

Fresh Air and Cordite at Thimbleby
by Matt Kiddle on July 25th, 2016

We literally had a blast at our annual clay day at Thimbleby Hall last week. The Yorkshire weather Gods were merciful and we were treated to a beautiful day of sunshine in the spectacular North Yorkshire Moors countryside. After a welcome round of bacon butties, the group was split into teams to embark on a […]

Investment Markets & Portfolios post Brexit
by Andrew Brook-Dobson on July 5th, 2016

The media frenzy seems to have abated a little after the shock result all of us at BDB woke up to on 24th June. I have had to strengthen my resolve to avoid the news as the sensationalist way in which they report things isn’t balanced and lacks the much-needed context for us all to […]

Quizzing with McCormicks
by Matt Kiddle on June 22nd, 2016

The BDB team had a lovely evening supporting the McCormicks out of office quiz event at West Park in Harrogate recently. Unfortunately our knowledge on TV lawyers and English counties requires a little work and as a result we ended up with the wooden spoon.  Who knew yaks have pink milk!? Being the good sports that […]

Brexit – Should I be worried about my investment portfolio?
by BDB Financial on June 17th, 2016

It seems the BDB team are keeping their cards close to their chests with respect to which way they are going to vote on 23rd June.  A wise move in my view as there is nothing like politics and religion to come between friends. This last week we have listened to the prophecies of doom […]

BDB in the Press
by BDB Financial on June 17th, 2016

Great to see us getting a couple of mentions in the Press this last week. The first which appeared in the Yorkshire Post had a somewhat premature headline which will become obvious when you read the detail.  Nevertheless, it was nice to see mention of our ten year anniversary and keep your eyes peeled for […]

Is the tide finally turning against outdated and expensive investing methods?
by BDB Financial on June 17th, 2016

Well, lets just say we are not counting our chickens just yet… Nevertheless, we were encouraged to hear David Cameron slam traditional investment fund managers this week saying “I think one of the things that saps people’s enthusiasm for saving in investment products is just a sense that they do not understand the fees and charges.” […]

Third Budget in 12 months!
by BDB Financial on March 17th, 2016

This Budget looked as if it would be a difficult one for the Chancellor, faced as he was with disappointing economic numbers and the need to avoid ruffling feathers ahead of June’s in/out referendum. What was to have been the big announcement – reform of pensions – was kicked into the long grass a few […]

Surging and Tumbling – The Media’s Stock Market Rollercoaster
by BDB Financial on January 29th, 2016

It has been fun observing the media’s search this week for ever more extreme language to describe the movements in global stock markets. Take a look at these two headlines which have come to my attention from the same source (The Telegraph) over the past 24 hours… 28/01/2016 – FTSE 100 tumbles as Osborne pulls Lloyds […]

Navigating the annual pension maze…
by BDB Financial on January 8th, 2016

Happy (Pensions) New Year to all of our clients, colleagues, friends and readers! It just wouldn’t feel like January without a new chapter of pensions rules to get our heads around and navigate for our clients. Without going into all of the detail here I thought it might be useful to just give a flavour (thank […]

Investing in ourselves…
by BDB Financial on December 9th, 2015

In a change from the typical investment noise you read from the companies in our profession, this blogpost is about a different type of investing… This week I finished  Diane Moisley-Mason’s personal development programme which I have been attending on Monday mornings for the past 7 weeks or so. The course covered several specific key areas each […]

Press – Yorkshire Business Insider
by BDB Financial on November 11th, 2015

Great to see Andrew appearing in this weeks Yorkshire Business Insider magazine where he had the opportunity to grab the headlines with one of our financial planning mantras. Most of our clients are familiar with our obsession of helping our clients live the most successful lives they can and not just in the material sense.  We often […]

Who wants to retire anyway?
by BDB Financial on October 27th, 2015

Attending the excellent IFP Conference earlier this month, Andrew, James and I were entertained and inspired again by another uplifting Keynote speech from Dr James Rouse. Dr Rouse explained how he had been travelling the world visiting various groups and populations of people who have a higher life expectancy than the norm to see just […]

Connecting the Pieces – IFP Annual Conference 2015

Last week Andrew, Matt and I attended the annual Institute of Financial Planning Conference held at Celtic Manor in Wales.  Following a certain game of rugby two weeks before I was somewhat reluctant to head into enemy territory; however I was told it was ‘not to be missed’ so I swallowed my nationalist pride and made the trip down […]

Is your future in safe hands? – Why you should have an LPA
by BDB Financial on October 13th, 2015

Thanks to our newest recruit Harriet for our latest blogpost! According to the Alzheimer’s Society there are around 850,000 people with dementia in the UK, of whom 40,000 are under 65. This number is forecast to exceed one million by 2025. It is estimated that around a third of people born in the UK in […]

Watch your bias
by BDB Financial on September 21st, 2015

We were interested to receive this great article in our inboxes recently from the Business Insider summarising how cognitive bias can impede good decision making. Many of the biases covered apply readily to the wealth destroying behaviours we look to protect our clients from when it comes to their decision making around investment and risk. To pick […]

Good luck all you Fledglings!

As we pack away our unused sun cream and barbecue for another year after a typical Yorkshire summer, the thoughts of many of our clients and their families focus back on returning to work and school for the start of another year. Our thoughts are especially with those families with young people heading off for their […]

“Don’t just do something. Stand there!”

Listening to some of the inevitable doom-mongering media fallout from “the great fall of China” this morning I was reminded of one of my favourite quotes from Jack Bogle, a founding father of index investing from a speech he made a couple of years ago. “While the interests of the business are served by the aphorism ‘Don’t […]

and the team gets bigger….
by BDB Financial on August 14th, 2015

We are now in our 10th year, and some significant hirings and promotions in recent weeks are an indication of our ambitious plans for the next 10. We have strengthened the team to ensure that we maintain the highest possible service standards for our clients as more people recognise the value of our approach and […]

A Golden Ticket to 68% Annual Returns
by BDB Financial on August 10th, 2015

At Brook-Dobson Brear we are often sceptical of any investment manager who claims that they can consistently ‘beat the market’.  Sure, there may be a reasonable number that do outperform the market over one year, but can they do it year on year? Can they do it over a decade? After all, most investors are […]

The things you can be certain of: Death, Taxes and Pension Reforms
by BDB Financial on July 27th, 2015

We all heard the headlines about the new freedoms afforded to pensioners in drawdown from April this year and the good news for Lamborghini’s order book. Another change which attracted far less coverage was the relaxation in the rules surrounding the treatment of pensions on death. Out went the much maligned 55% ‘death tax’ charge, and […]

Kicking the tyres of our Investment Portfolios
by BDB Financial on July 21st, 2015

This week, James has been preparing the Management Information (MI) pack for our quarterly investment committee meeting. These meetings are an important opportunity for us to take an in depth look at how our clients’ investment portfolios are performing, take stock of new research and developments in financial markets and consider how it all fits in with our core […]

Sharing Ideas On Best Practice
by BDB Financial on July 14th, 2015

I really enjoyed giving a presentation to the Leeds Branch of the Institute of Financial Planning (IFP) together with Caroline Keegan of Serenity Financial Planning yesterday.  Caroline (and Serenity) share many of our values on how financial planning and advice should be delivered. The subject matter was cashflow modelling and financial forecasting and there was excellent engagement […]

The first Conservative Budget since 1996
by BDB Financial on July 10th, 2015

We’ve been waiting for this Budget with bated breath since the Conservatives won the election in May – and the Chancellor delivered a lot in his “big Budget” of Summer 2015. In many ways, Mr Osborne’s announcements this time around are more important than in March, as this Budget sets out many of the measures the Conservatives have wanted […]

Don’t be the bagholder…
by BDB Financial on June 23rd, 2015

I had a great conversation this week with a representative from an investment company who was keen for us to use his services.  He had quite different views to the core beliefs which underpin the way we think about money and inevitably, the conversation progressed into a good natured debate around the difference between investment […]

Are you a Tortoise or a Mayfly?
by BDB Financial on June 7th, 2015

Did anyone else catch the media coverage of the launch of Ubble last week? Following a study of 500,000 volunteers, Swedish academics have built an online calculator which shows the likelihood of people over 40 dying within the next five years based on responses to a few simple questions. Granted, for lots of people ignorance […]

Who is your risk manager?

Those who have heard us talk about the way in which we think about managing money will have heard us say “its all about risk”. But what do we mean by that? When most people talk about risk what they are really talking about is ‘volatility’.  Or in other words, how much their portfolio fluctuates […]

Red for Success!
by BDB Financial on May 21st, 2015

I was amused to hear on the radio recently of a scientific study (now almost ten years old) which revealed that teams and individuals which play in red are statistically more likely to achieve sporting success than others. For example, when evenly matched in combat sports (such as boxing or tae kwon do) reds emerge victorious […]

by BDB Financial on May 7th, 2015

It was great to see Andrew Brook-Dobson appearing in this month’s Financial Planner magazine. Where is the evidence? – Injecting some science into your investment approach
by BDB Financial on April 24th, 2015

As Gordon Gekko reminds us in the film Wall Street, investing is a ‘zero sum game’.  On average, half of investors outperform the market and half underperform.  However, when you add in the costs of investment, outperformance starts to look an increasingly difficult challenge. Traditionally, investors have attempted to solve this problem by searching for those […]

Diversification – The Importance of Claiming Your ‘Free Lunch’
by BDB Financial on March 16th, 2015

Diversification and Investments Diversification is the investment world’s equivalent to ‘don’t put all your eggs in one basket’.  Rather than taking your savings and investing in one or two companies, you spread it across hundreds or thousands instead, usually by investing in funds. Imagine you had two portfolios: one consisting of shares in 10 […]

2014 Investment Review
by BDB Financial on February 6th, 2015

Economic Background Another mixed year for the global economy as countries with (varying degrees of success) continue to try to navigate their way out of one of the deepest recessions in history. The UK economy performed well despite the uncertainty caused by the Scottish referendum and concerns about low inflation.  The US economy also continued […]
