BDB Second Opinion Service

“We could probably do with a second opinion…”

“… there are known knowns; there are things we know we know. We also know there are known unknowns; that is to say we know there are some things we do not know. But there are also unknown unknowns – the ones we don’t know we don’t know” Donald Rumsfeld, 2012.

Confused? We meet many people who have an adviser and they are under the impression that everything is ‘in order’, confident that they are sailing the right course to achieving their desired future. Scratching the surface on many plans sadly often reveals some worrying cracks, but equally we do meet people who’s course is set fair and we tell them so!

We have very clear views on how plans for the future should be drawn up and implemented. These plans are centred on many, many individual and personal issues but can often be encapsulated in the catch-all questions “What’s it all about?” Why are we working, saving, investing? What do we dream about doing in ‘the future?’ and maybe “Why not now?”  Am I paying too much? (What am I paying?) We want our client to have big, exciting but realistic and affordable plans. We want to aim to bounce the cheque to the undertaker!

Our experience is that some people we meet with ‘workable plans’ in fact don’t have any real context in their planning. Context is vital. They are not really aware of what they are paying and for what – this is not surprising as some costs really aren’t clear. Costs are important. Many are not really aware of how much risk they are taking or even why they are taking any risk. Do they need to be taking risk? Too much risk is bad.

We are sometimes shocked by how big the gap is between perception and reality.  We often come across many ‘unknown unknowns’ at a very early stage. Recognising this we are offering friends and colleagues of our clients, who are concerned about not knowing what they don’t know, to meet us and get a proper second opinion on their plans. We are confident that we are able to ascertain whether plans are fit for purpose without having to charge for a real analysis.

If you would like to be considered for a proper second opinion of your plans then please email us at . Hopefully it will result in converting some unknowns into knowns.
